UNICEF: Children in Sudan face “unimaginable suffering” due to the war – the seventh day

The head of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Catherine Russell has warned that Sudan is now the largest and most humanitarian crisis in the world. And after two years of war, where more than 30 million people – more than half of them children – live under the weight of collective atrocities, famine and deadly diseases.

“This is not just a crisis, but rather a multi -dimensional crisis that affects every sector, from health and nutrition to water, education and protection,” Catherine Russell said in front of the Security Council ambassadors, according to the official website of the United Nations.

Since the outbreak of the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces and their pro -militias in April 2023, tens of thousands of civilians have been killed and more than 12 million people were forced to flee their homes – about 3.5 million as refugees in neighboring countries.

Lush agricultural lands were also destroyed, famine has been declared in several regions, and biomedical infrastructure – including hospitals – has been destroyed or evacuated.

During the period between June and December 2024 alone, more than 900 cases of serious children’s rights were recorded, with 80% of them are linked to death or distortion.

Ms. Russell said: “Children in Sudan bear an unimaginable suffering and horrific violence. The last time I visited Sudan, I met with families and children living in this nightmare. Their stories are painful – and they call immediate work.”

More than 770,000 children are expected to suffer from acute malnutrition this year, many of them in areas cut off from humanitarian aid.

“Without life -saving aid, many of these children will die,” Russell stressed. It called on the International Security Council to pressure all parties to allow an uncomplicated human arrival, especially through the main border crossings.

Russell concluded her statements, certainly the urgent need for global work.
