UNRWA Commissioner: Dismantling the UN agency will increase the suffering of the Palestinians – the seventh day

UNRWA Commissioner -General Philip Lazarini said that the dismantling of the agency suddenly “will only deepen the suffering of the Palestinian refugees, and will not cancel their status as refugees,” stressing that their rights will remain independently of the agency’s existence. According to the United Nations Media Center

Lazarini explained that the legislation approved by the Knesset and entered into force in late January is not only related to UNRWA, but rather “any individual or organization calling for commitment to international humanitarian law or promoting the rights of Palestinians.”

“With a number of international NGOs has already silence, there is now a greater combined effort in Israel to undermine or restrict international organizations and NGOs through legislative measures,” Lazarini stressed.

The Israeli Knesset has adopted two laws, one of which would stop the work of UNRWA in the occupied Palestinian land, and the other prohibits Israeli officials to communicate with the agency, pointing to the campaign of misinformation that UNRWA depicts as a “terrorist organization”, and its employees as “terrorists or sympathetic to the terrorists.”

He said that the agency also faced serious operational challenges throughout the occupied land since the legislation entered into force, but he stressed that UNRWA will remain and implement its mandate assigned to it from the General Assembly “until it becomes not possible to do this in the way based on principles.”
