The United Nations condemns the killing and injury of members of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan – the seventh day

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (Unmes) said that a United Nations helicopter was conducting a evacuation in the Nasser area, in the state of Upper Nile, who was shot, killing a crew and wounding two others seriously.

The mission reported that many members of the Popular Defense Forces of southern Sudan, including a injured general, were killed while the mission attempted to remove them from the area, which took place at the request of all parties.

The mission indicated that the evacuation was part of Unmes’s efforts to help prevent violence in the Nasser region and calm political tensions, following the recent clashes between the Popular Defense Forces of southern Sudan and armed youth, which caused a large number of victims and civilian displacement.

“The attack on members of the United Nations mission in South Sudan is very hateful and may constitute a war crime under international law. We are strongly regretted for the tragic loss of our colleague and we express our sincere condolences to his loved ones.”

The head of the mission also regretted the killing of those who were trying to evacuate them, especially after receiving guarantees in safe passage, adding: “The United Nations Mission in South Sudan urges an investigation to determine the officials and hold them accountable.”

The mission called on all actors to refrain from more violence, and also called on the country’s leaders to intervene urgently to resolve tensions through dialogue and ensure that the security situation in Nasser does not deteriorate, and on a broader scale.

She added that it is important for the parties to commit to their commitment to maintaining the ceasefire and protecting the safety of the peace agreement.
