Guterres expresses his concern about the recent clashes in Syria – the seventh day

The Secretary -General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed concern about the recent clashes in the coastal areas of Syria, including reports on civilian casualties.

For his part, UN spokesman Stephen Dujarric said that the Secretary -General strongly condemns all violence in Syria, calling on the parties to protect civilians and stop hostilities.

He added that “the Secretary -General is concerned about the danger of escalating tensions between societies in Syria at a time when reconciliation and peaceful political transition should be a top priority after 14 years of conflict. The Syrians deserve sustainable peace, prosperity and justice.”

In turn, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Gear Pederson, said in light of the continued developments of the situation and our endeavor to accurately verify the facts, there is an immediate need to control the soul from all parties, and to ensure full respect for the protection of civilians in accordance with international law.

The UN envoy stressed that all parties should refrain from any actions that may fuel tensions, escalate the conflict, exacerbate the suffering of affected societies, destabilize Syria, or undermine credible and comprehensive political transition for all.
