The Security Council extends the sanctions on the Somali youth movement until December 13 – the seventh day

The United Nations Security Council has officially announced the extension of the mandate granted to member states to prevent any ships from exporting weapons or coal and transporting illegal prohibited goods from Somalia, a punishment that will remain in effect until December 13, 2025.

The Security Council renewed the mandate of the expert team in support of the sanctions imposed on the Somali youth movement, which will now continue until January 13, 2026.

The Security Council stated that these sanctions will not affect the transfer of military equipment to the Somali National Army, the National Intelligence and Security Agency, the Somali police force, or the Somali Reform Agency.

After the vote, representatives of several countries expressed their support for this decision, and encouraged the Security Council to continue its support and give priority to the efforts made by the Somali government during the next evaluation.

The Security Council also welcomed the decision to assign the Secretary -General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to review the arms embargo and submit a report to the Security Council on this issue by the first of November 2025.

It is worth noting that Resolution 2776 of 2005, which was unanimously adopted by all 15 members of the Security Council, states that “all countries must take the necessary measures to prevent youth movement and other groups that threaten peace and security in Somalia from obtaining weapons and ammunition.”
