Tensions in South Sudan … the arrest of the deputy chief of staff and the besieging of Riek Machar – the seventh day

A state of severe tensions prevailed in the capital of southern Sudan, Juba, against the backdrop of the arrest of the Vice -President of the Staff, Lieutenant General Gabriel Dub, of the Riek Machar Pavilion, at a time when the security forces are besieging the residence of Vice President Salva Kiir, Riek Machar.

For its part, the popular movement, led by Riek Machar, announced that the measure carried out by the Chief of Staff of the Army, Lieutenant General Paul Nun, with the detention of the deputy chief of staff, Lieutenant General Gabriel Dub Lam, is a violation of the stimulant peace agreement, and the detention was described as illegal.

The movement said in an official statement, that it was the head of the Army Staff who arrested his deputy and this detention is illegal, according to the Niles website.

The statement expressed the concern of the main partner in the transitional government regarding the heavy deployment of the army forces about the residence of the head of the movement and the first deputy of the President of the Republic, Dr. Riek Machar, stressing that these measures undermine confidence between the parties and expose efforts to calm the current violence that broke out in Nasser County in the state of the Nile.

The popular movement called on all parties to continue efforts to ensure the end of violence in the state of the Upper Nile, and the guarantor of the agreement to avoid the return of violence to a wide range.
