A clarification from the Tunisian external about the death of one of its citizens at an Italian detention center – the seventh day

Today, Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration abroad presented an explanation about the death of the Tunisian citizen, Wissam Ben Abd al -Latif, in San Camello Hospital in Rome in 2021, whose case has now become the subject of the Italian judiciary, and the ministry confirmed that the Tunisian citizen, “Wissam Ben Abd al -Latif”, came to Italy in October 2021 and was housed in a first stage at the Billarmo deportation center, before it was transferred to Baraoma Hospital on October 13, 2021, according to the Tunisian News Agency.

She added that, as soon as she learned of the news of the death, the Tunisian consulate in Rome, in coordination with the local authorities, reported that the assistant prosecutor of the Republic reported that research was concluded in this case by preserving the charges of unintended killing and kidnapping, directed at the medical and semi -medical frame Medical.

In this context, she continued that the Rome Court decided during a session on April 9th, to postpone the declaration of the ruling on the case until next September 10.

It stated that the Tunisian consulate in Rome provided the necessary support to the family of the deceased, including the continuous follow -up of procedures related to the transfer of the body to the homeland, and to provide the necessary psychological and administrative briefing.

In this context, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed that it is working, in coordination with diplomatic and consular missions, to further tightly briefing the Tunisian community abroad and defending its interests.

It also stated that the missions are working to intensify visits to prisons and reception centers, accommodation and deportation, and hold periodic meetings with those in charge of these institutions to follow up the conditions of Tunisian citizens closely and listen to their concerns and enable them to contact their people, as well as verify the extent of guarantees related to protecting their rights and preserving their dignity, according to what is stipulated in international treaties and standards.

The Ministry highlighted that it attaches this humanitarian issue the highest levels of importance, and continues to work to preserve the dignity of all Tunisian citizens abroad and protect their rights in all circumstances, denying, in this regard, what was circulated on social media regarding the attempt of a Tunisian citizen in one of the Italian suspension and deportation centers on Thursday evening, April 3.

On the other hand, the ministry’s communication stated that it “refuted the popular news of some social media sites regarding the Italian authorities deporting a number of Tunisians who are on the Italian soil irregularly to the shelters and deportation centers in the Republic of Albania in accordance with the agreement concluded between the two countries”, which confirmed that “the work was suspended by the Italian judiciary and the approval of referring the file to the eyes of the European Court of Justice.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Tunisians abroad called for further investigation and confirmation of this information before it was circulated.
