The Jordanian authorities announced the completion of the detection work on the Hijazi line during April in preparation for the conduct of tourism trips to the city of Daraa, southern Syria.
“We continue to reveal the path from Mafraq to the zero area near the Syrian border, in cooperation with the relevant authorities,” said Zahi Khalil, director of the Jordanian Hijazi Hijaz Foundation. Khalil added, “We coordinate with the Syrian side to ensure technical readiness in preparation for running trips,” Khalil added.

Khalil stressed that the reactivation of the historical Hijazi line aims to stimulate tourism between Jordan and Syria.
The Hijazi iron line is a historic railway built by the Ottomans in the early twentieth century, and its aim was to link Damascus to Medina, through a number of cities and towns in Syria, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, to facilitate the travel of pilgrims to the Hijaz.

The idea of this line was crystallized in 1900 and its construction works began in September of the same year by order of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II before the work ended in 1908.
