The Secretary -General of the United Nations confirms his participation in the upcoming Baghdad Summit – the seventh day

The representative of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kazem Obaid, confirmed today, Wednesday, that the Secretary -General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, before Iraq’s official invitation to participate in the Arab summit in Baghdad.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a statement that “the representative of the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations in New York, Abbas Kazem Obaid, met the Secretary -General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, at the organization’s headquarters, and during the meeting, the representative of Iraq presented the official message from the President of the Republic, Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, to the Secretary -General, which includes his call to attend and participate in the upcoming Arab summit to be held in the capital Baghdad on May 17, 2025.”

And Obaid conveyed, according to the statement, “The greetings of the President of the Republic, the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shi’a Al -Sudani, and the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fouad Hussein, to the Secretary -General,” stressing their keenness to “his presence, because of his participation in the summit discussions.”

The statement added, “During the meeting, the most prominent issues raised on the United Nations agenda were also discussed in light of the regional and international geopolitical variables, as well as the priorities and concerns of the group of 77 and China, which is currently headed by Iraq, especially in the areas of development financing, climate change, and sustainable development.”

The representative of Iraq, according to the statement, stressed, “The group’s keenness to enhance the partnership with the United Nations and its specialized agencies, to achieve common goals in accordance with the principle of collective responsibility.”

He continued, “The meeting dealt with the prospects for cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations in the post -end of the United Nations Assistance Mission (UNAMA), appreciating the efforts made by the mission during the past two decades,” noting “the measures and facilities provided by the Iraqi government institutions concerned to end the mission’s tasks responsible by the end of this year.”

For his part, the Secretary -General of the United Nations expressed his “appreciation to invite him to attend the Arab summit in Baghdad, stressing his participation in its work,” noting that “ending the tasks of the UNAMI mission is an indication of the great progress and successes that Iraq has achieved in various fields.”
