Pope Francis renews his call for peace talks in South Sudan – the seventh day

Pope Francis, the Pope of the Vatican, today called for the resumption of peace talks in southern Sudan, after the operation stopped following the arrest of the country’s first vice president, Riek Machar, on March 27.

In his message, the Pope expressed the angelic evangelization on the occasion of the fourth Sunday of the Great Fasting, which was published by the Vatican Press Office, its concern about the situation in the African state, which worsened a few weeks ago when members of the White Army, a pro -Mashr group, attacked an army base in the state of the Nile.

“I renew my sincere call to all leaders to do everything in their power to reduce tensions in the country,” Pope Francis said. To achieve this, “We need to put our differences aside, with courage and responsibility, we sit around the table and start a constructive dialogue.”

Pope of the Vatican added: “In this way only, it will be possible to alleviate the suffering of the beloved people of South Sudan and build a future of peace and stability.”

On Wednesday, the opposition Liberation Movement party canceled the peace plan in the wake of the arrest of its leader, Machar, on “unclear charges,” according to Raith Motch Tang, a member of the party’s leadership.

According to the peace agreement signed in 2018, Machar, a member of the Al -Nuwair Al -Nuwair, the minority ethnic group, was appointed as the first vice president in a government led by Salva Kiir, a member of the majority of Dinka.

The African Union and the United Nations announced in a statement last Saturday an agreement aimed at accelerating the process of finding a diplomatic solution to this new crisis in southern Sudan and restoring the peace agreement signed seven years ago.

The Pope said: “I hope that new negotiations will start as soon as possible, capable of ensuring a permanent solution to the crisis,” stressing that “the international community must double its efforts to address this terrible humanitarian catastrophe” in that country.
