The security forces in southern Sudan arrested Riek Machar, the vice -president of South Sudan and his arrest by force.

According to Reuters, Riek Machar, First Vice President of South Sudan, was arrested after the Minister of Defense and the Head of National Security entered his residence, where he handed him an arrest warrant.

The Sudan Popular Movement Party condemned the “National Congress Party”, which it considered the flagrant violation of the constitution and the reactivative peace agreement, which ended a civil war witnessed by the country during the period from 2013 to 2018 between the forces loyal to Machar on the one hand and President Salva Kiir.

According to the party’s statement, the Vice President’s guards were stripped of their weapons, and he was handed over an arrest warrant on unclear charges, noting that there are attempts to transfer him elsewhere.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan hastened to warn that this step puts the country on the brink of war, calling on all parties to control.

“On this night, the country’s leaders are standing on the brink of slipping into a widespread struggle or moving the country forward towards peace, recovery and democracy,” mission head Nicholas Heissum said in a statement. Haysum appealed to the two parties to the conflict, “restraint”, he invited them to behave the path of peace in the spirit of consensus reached in 2018 when they signed and committed to implementing the peace agreement.

The United Nations has reported clashes during the past 24 hours between the forces loyal to the two men outside the capital, Juba.
