The Austrian Ministry of the Interior confirmed that the requests for asylum for those coming from Syria are witnessing a clear decline in the wake of the change of power in Damascus and the end of the acceptance of new Syrian asylum applications in the country.

The ministry said, in a statement today / Saturday / – that during the month of February, only 315 applications were submitted, and this is just more than half of the requests submitted in January (618) requests, while in February last year it reached 1308 requests.

The statement pointed out that the last time the number of requests for asylum reached this low level was in 2020.

The statement indicated that the asylum applications submitted by the Syrians are not treated now except in exceptional cases such as treatment, pointing out that this year, only 39 people obtained asylum mode and for comparison, 860 Afghan were granted asylum.

In total, asylum was granted to 1240 cases in 2025, and in addition, there are 444 accommodations either for sub -protection or for reasons that deserve to be considered.

According to the statement, as is the case last January, Afghanistan ranked first in request statistics in February.

In general, the number of asylum applications this year reached 3315 requests and in the first two months of last year, they numbered 4,489 requests, and about 52 percent of the applicants are under the age of 18.
