Libyan Attorney General: 228 candidates for the municipal elections with criminal records – the seventh day

The Libyan Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed, on Thursday, that the review of the candidates’ records for the municipal elections revealed that 228 of the 4114 candidates for criminal records installed in the public prosecutor system.

The Public Prosecutor explained that some of the candidates have issued judicial rulings against them, after the National High Commissioner for Elections requested official information about them from the Public Prosecutor’s Office.

He pointed out that the charges against those concerned vary between murders, threats, intoxicating, destroying, making, stealing public money, and defamation, in addition to different misdemeanors.

This information raises questions about the standards of candidacy for the municipal elections and the extent of the commitment of the concerned authorities to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and protect local institutions from the infiltration of the precedents.
