Director of Al -Shifa Hospital in Gaza: We lose a wounded every minute and we expect the number of martyrs to double – the seventh day

The director of Al -Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip, Dr. Muhammad Abu Salma, said that the health situation in the sector is catastrophic with the continued Israeli bombing, stressing that every minute loses the wounded of his life due to the lack of medical capabilities.

He added that the number of martyrs may double in the coming hours in light of the inability of hospitals to absorb the injured, warning that the health system is about to completely collapse.

Abu Salmiya explained that Al -Shifa Hospital suffers from a complete collapse in medical services, as the dead refrigerators no longer accommodate the bodies of the martyrs, while operating rooms work with limited capabilities to receive unprecedented numbers of wounded.

He pointed out that many children were subjected to amputation of their limbs or eloquent burns that require concentrated, unavailable care, which increases the numbers of victims who could be saved if the minimum medical capabilities are available.

Israel launched, at dawn on Tuesday, extensive raids on the Gaza Strip, which has so far resulted in 356 martyrs and dozens of injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The raids targeted several sites, including Al -Maghazi camp, Khan Yunis and Rafah.

Abu Salmiya emphasized that hospitals in Gaza and the north of the Strip have only 4 family care families, a number that does not meet the minimum needs of the injured.

He added that thousands of wounded, among them who are in critical cases, do not receive appropriate treatment due to the lack of medicines and medical supplies, which makes the high number of martyrs an inevitable matter.

He explained that dozens of patients who need urgent surgeries die in front of doctors who are unable to help them in light of the severe shortage of biological equipment and medicines.

He pointed out that the continued closure of the crossings for more than 15 days exacerbated the crisis, as no international medical supplies or rescue teams have arrived despite the repeated calls of the World Health Organization, the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders.

He explained that the basic medical devices, such as artificial respirators and dialysis devices, are about to stop working due to lack of fuel, which threatens the lives of patients within the intensive care departments.

Abu Salma expressed his regret for the loss of the wounded in front of the eyes of the medical teams due to the lack of capabilities, saying that many of the injured can be saved if the basic medical supplies are available.

He explained that the operating rooms are unable to absorb all cases, and this puts the doctors in front of difficult decisions related to the priority of treatment, adding that the doctors work under tremendous pressure, as they are forced to perform surgeries without full anesthesia in some cases due to the lack of necessary medicines.

Regarding the possibility of saving the stranded under the rubble, he stressed that the civil defense teams are unable to reach them due to the destruction of roads and the lack of heavy equipment, which leads to the death of many of them without the paramedics being able to help them.

He added that the scenes of children and women stranded under the rubble have become frequent, and that their cries that hear between the rubble increases the tragic scene, while the deficit remains the master of the situation.

Abu Salmiya indicated that these conditions bring back to mind the first days of the war in October 2023, when hospitals received thousands of martyrs and wounded in one day.

But he stressed that the current situation is more tragic, as the health system in Gaza lost its ability to deal with the increasing numbers of victims, explaining that many patients with chronic diseases, such as heart patients and cancer, are no longer able to receive treatment due to the emergency priority of the wounded.

Abu Salma warned of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, stressing that the Gaza Strip is immediately needed for field hospitals, additional medical teams and rescue equipment, to reduce the human losses that rise every minute.

The director of Al -Shifa Hospital in Gaza called on the international community to move urgently to save thousands of lives that have become threatened by the continued Israeli aggression and the blockade imposed on the sector.

At the beginning of this March, the first phase of the 42 -day ceasefire agreement ended, while Israel dismissed the second stage and ended the war, which has killed more than 40,000 martyrs since the beginning of the aggression on October 7, 2023.
