Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert called on the government of Benjamin Netanyahu to communicate with the new Syrian administration and open a dialogue with it.
Olmert said that Israel should seek calm and security understandings in the short term, and reach a peace treaty with the Damascus government in the most distant term.

In an interview with the “Monitor” website, Olmert added that Israel should inform Syrian President Ahmed Al -Shara that Tel Aviv is ready for dialogue.

Olmert confirmed that reaching understandings with Syria may also pave the way for peace talks between Israel and Lebanon.
Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel would not tolerate the presence of forces affiliated with the Syrian government in southern Syria, calling for disarmament from this region.
