UNICEF: Palestine children face very disturbing conditions – the seventh day

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned today /Sunday that children in Palestine are facing “very disturbing” conditions, where they live in “extreme fear and anxiety” and suffer from the implications of depriving them of humanitarian assistance and protection.

This came in a statement issued by the regional director of UNICEF in the Middle East and North Africa, Edward Besbider, after a 4 -day field visit to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

In the statement – the situation in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, “is very worrying, as almost all 2.4 million children are affected by one form or another,” adding that “some children live in great fear and anxiety, while others face real consequences to deny them humanitarian assistance and protection, displacement, destruction, or even death, and they must be protected.”

He pointed out that about a million children in the Gaza Strip lack the basic necessities of survival, as a result of the restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid.

In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the UN official affirmed – in the statement broadcast by the Palestinian News Agency (Wafa) today – more than 200 Palestinian children and 3 Israeli children have been killed since October 2023, which is the highest death toll among children in such a time period during the past two decades.

He stressed that “children should not be killed, injured or displaced, and all parties must respect their obligations under international law.”
He continued, “The basic needs of civilians related to protection must be met, and humanitarian aid is widely raised,” he added.
