The Financial Times: The Trump administration must pressure Netanyahu to end the siege on Gaza – the seventh day

The British newspaper “Financial Times” urged the administration of US President Donald Trump to pressure Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to allow aid to flow to the Gaza Strip, which has become suffering from a renewed siege.

The newspaper stated- in an editorial- that Israel first stopped entering all humanitarian aid to Gaza, then cut off the remaining electricity from the besieged sector, as it threatened to suspend water supplies to the Strip on the pretext of pressure on Hamas to accept adjustments to the multi-stage ceasefire agreed by the two warring parties last January, and the release of half of the remaining hostages in Gaza at once before the start of the second stage.

The newspaper said that the extremist right -wing Netanyahu government’s actions this month highlights its satirical use of collective punishment against the 2.2 million people of Gaza to achieve its war goals against Hamas, stressing that the Gaza population should not be punished for the movement’s actions and the Geneva Convention is obligated to allow the delivery of food and basic supplies to the population.

However, the Netanyahu government has used humanitarian aid as a war tool since Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. Two days after these events, the then Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galent ordered the imposition of a “comprehensive siege” on Gaza, according to the newspaper.

The newspaper pointed out that Gaza is now facing the risk of running out of fresh food within weeks, as well as the fuel needed to operate generators and pumping water from the remaining wells that were not damaged by the conflict. Nevertheless, Netanyahu does not offer any apology. His extremist allies have publicly called for a return to a comprehensive siege, and this happens at a time when the US -backed ceasefire appears to be at stake.

“The Vinanchel Times” explained that Netanyahu now wants to change the course of things, adhering to his refusal to end the war. European powers have issued official statements criticizing the cessation of aid; The Trump administration has not issued any condemnation. Instead, Netanyahu and his allies from the extreme right are encouraged by Trump’s strange plan to displace Gaza’s population and convert it into “Middle East Riviera”.

At the end of its editorial, the newspaper said that Trump was quick to deal with the other United States allies, from Canada to Ukraine, by following the principle of the usual stick in his attempts to subject others to his will, but until now Netanyahu has given freedom to act, stressing that at the very least, Trump should compel Netanyahu to end the siege and support the efforts of the brokers to restore the ceasefire agreement to his path.
