Regional Director of the United Nations Population Fund expresses concern about the violence in Syria – the seventh day

The regional director of the United Nations Population Fund for Arab States, Laila Bakr, expressed her deep concern about the recent violence in the Syrian coastal areas, where civilians were killed and wounded, including a United Nations employee.

In a statement today, Wednesday, Leila Bakr condemned the targeting of health care workers, hospitals and health facilities, stressing that the attacks on civilians and health care facilities are a violation of international humanitarian law and cannot be tolerated.

She stressed the need for peace to prevail immediately; After fourteen years of conflict, women and girls in Syria are eager to peace and recovery, and a space to rebuild their destructive lives, stressing that they are “mastered to safety, health care, job opportunities and education, and to end violence, displacement and destruction.”

The UN official said that Syria’s recovery and transitional career must be based on justice, based on the principles of non -discrimination, and the benefit of the decisive role that women contribute to building peace.

She added that the United Nations Population Fund will continue to provide the basic reproductive health care services for in need of women and girls, and work to prevent gender -based violence and address it, noting that protecting women and girls from violence is an ethical duty and a basic pillar of sustainable peace.
