The detention of a Palestinian student who participated in the Columbia University protests – the seventh day

The Union of Columbia University Students in New York reported that members of US President Donald Trump arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian graduate student, who played a prominent role in the protests supporting Palestine at the university.

The Union said in a statement that agents from the US Dakhli Ministry of Security arrested Khalil from his university residence yesterday, Saturday.

The student Maryam Alwan and 3 other students – who asked not to reveal their identities for fear of prosecution – confirmed that Khalil is studying at the College of International and Public Affairs.

Maryam – a student of the University of Colombia’s last year and was protesting alongside Khalil – that the Trump administration was landing of the Palestinian destiny.

She added that she feels panic from what happened to her friend Khalil, a legal resident, as well as “horror feelings” that this is just a beginning.

As for the students, they said that it was not yet clear on any basis that the elements of the Ministry of Internal Security, Khalil, who married an American, were held, and he was still in detention.

Khalil was one of the negotiators with university officials on behalf of the protesting students supporting the Palestinians, who held a protest camp inside the university last year.

The arrest of Khalil is among the first steps that Trump apparently takes to fulfill his promise to seek to deport some foreign students involved in the pro -Palestine protest movement.

For his part, a spokesman for the University of Colombia said that the university is legally obligated to not share information about students.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Security or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – who is responsible for organizing the visa system in the country – did not respond to requests for suspension.

In an interview with Reuters, before his arrest yesterday, Khalil expressed his concern about his targeting by the government and some conservative groups supporting Israel, due to his statements to the media.

Khalil pointed out that the University of Colombia summoned the police twice to arrest the protesters, took disciplinary measures against many students and employees who support the Palestinian cause, and some of them stopped studying.

He added that the university largely silenced anyone who supports Palestine on the campus, explaining that Trump uses the protesters as a “scapegoat” as part of his broader program to fight higher education and undermine the education system.

Two days ago, the White House canceled grants and contracts with a total value of $ 400 million at the University of Colombia, due to “the failure to face the constant harassment of Jewish students,” according to the President of the President of Trump.
