In his message distributed by the United Nations Media Center in Cairo, Guterres said that on this occasion, the occasion of the International Women’s Day, we celebrate thirty years of progress and achievements that have been made since the Historic United Nations Conference in Beijing, the conference has made a change in women’s rights – as it was renewed by the confirmation of these rights as human rights. Guterres called to be realistic and realize the challenge for its reality. Between rejection and retreat, human rights remain due to women under threat. Old atrocities – from violence, discrimination, economic inequality – are still raging societies.
He warned that the latest forms of threats, such as biased algorithms, involve inequality in designing Internet spaces, opening new areas of harassment and abuse. Instead of generalizing equality in rights, we are witnessing a generalization of women’s hostility.
He stressed that it is our duty to resist these condemnation aspects, and to continue to work to achieve equal opportunities for women and girls.
